About Punta Tuna Natural Reserve

Punta Tuna Natural Reserve is situated along the southeastern coast of Puerto Rico, within the municipality of Maunabo. Covering coastal forests, mangrove wetlands, coral reefs, and white sandy beaches, the reserve serves as a critical habitat for a variety of native and migratory species, including endangered sea turtles and numerous coastal birds. The geography is characterized by rocky cliffs and coastal plains that provide stunning ocean vistas. Ecologically, the area preserves mangrove lagoons essential for maintaining coastal water quality and serves as a nursery for many marine species. Historically, the reserve encompasses the ruins of the Punta Tuna Lighthouse, built in 1892, a notable landmark that attracts visitors interested in Puerto Rican heritage. Outdoor enthusiasts can partake in hiking along designated trails, beachcombing, birdwatching, snorkeling in nearby reefs, and exploring the cultural landmarks. The reserve offers tranquil natural beauty relatively untouched compared to more developed tourist areas. Its blend of ecological importance and historical significance makes it a unique destination for both nature lovers and cultural visitors seeking authentic experiences away from heavy crowds.
